THROUGH THE FOCUS OF KARL KANI

Carl Williams grew up in 1970s New York City during the early rise of hip-hop culture. He first tried to become a rapper and DJ, but when that didn’t work out, he shifted his focus to fashion. Inspired by his father’s custom tailoring, he began designing and making his own clothing, slowly building his own style within his community.

By the time he was 19, Williams was creating custom outfits for kids in his neighborhood, even though he had no official brand name. A turning point came when he saw someone wearing one of his designs in a park. After a conversation where people questioned why his name wasn’t on the clothing, he realized he needed a brand identity. Soon after, he created the name @karlkani, inspired by his own question of “Can I succeed?”

In 1991, Karl Kani began growing quickly, working with figures like Sean Combs and collaborating with streetwear label Cross Colours. As hip-hop expanded into the mainstream, artists such as The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, and Wu-Tang Clan helped popularize the brand by wearing it publicly. Karl Kani became part of the wider streetwear movement, growing alongside hip-hop culture itself.
