This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features South of North Amsterdam, an independent record label founded by Dominik Rodemann, also known as Marathon Man. The label is based between Amsterdam and Paris and focuses on discovering music that sits outside the mainstream. Its first release in 2018 was a reissue of Searching by Dutch musician Ronald Langestraat, a jazz-soul album he originally recorded on his own in 1984.
South of North continues to explore a wide range of sounds, including ambient, dub, electronic, garage rock, and noise. The label works with artists such as Brokenchord, CV Vision, Elizabeth Davis, Nicolini, La Rat, Devon Rexi, and Jacob Dywer. Rather than sticking to one genre, the label is built on curiosity, freedom, and constant experimentation.
The latest Carhartt WIP Radio episode includes a one-hour mix by Marathon Man, highlighting the label’s diverse catalogue and previewing upcoming releases. An accompanying interview with Rodemann offers insight into the label’s values, the meaning behind its name, and a few albums he has recently rediscovered.
